What is the best way of getting between Moscow and St Petersburg? I think the train appeals to us most, but I don't know how to go about booking it? Jan Morgan, Birmingham
Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: The 400-mile journey between Moscow and St Petersburg takes 1 hour 25 minutes by plane, and costs about £60 one-way (bookable through Opodo.co.uk). Alternatively, there are regular buses, but it's tricky buying tickets in advance, and the bus stations are very crowded.
So you are right to plumb for the train, which takes you straight from one city centre to the other, and is a great insight into the country. The fastest express trains take less than five hours, and have comfortable carriages. Or you can travel overnight on a slower train and arrive at your destination early in the morning.
Way to Russia has a handy search engine, which seeks out the cheapest booking options, then directs you to a local Russian travel company to complete the booking. Fares start at about £19 in second class on a slow train, and rise to £76 for first class on a fast train. Or try Svezhy Veter Travel Agency, or Grint Travel.
