First impressions: An English country mansion from central casting. The tallest trees you’ve ever seen. Just why is this called the New Forest anyway, when they are clearly so ancient?

Why it’s special: Forty acres of grounds, a croquet lawn, maze, tennis court, outdoor pool and warren full of cute brown bunnies. Plus the beaten copper, mosaic-tiled Alahambra room, a replica of the Alhambra palace in Granada, built in the 1890s.

Hitting the sack: The 34 rooms have been refurbished in a modern, slightly corporate style. Huge 42in flat-screen TVs.

Sampling the fare: Local scallops a standout among the starters; seared seabass with bok choi among the mains. Nearest pubs are miles away, so you’re a captive audience when it comes to drinks in the evening (small bottles of beer £3 a time).

Added attractions: Close to the golden beaches at Christchurch and Bournemouth. And of course that huge forest. with its ponies, deer and even pigs.

What we think: Formal exterior belies a relaxed approach. Wall-to-wall wedding parties during our visit — a splendid setting. But equally suitable for discreet couples.

Bottom line: B&B doubles from £150. Dinner, B&B midweek breaks from £126.
