First impressions

An imposing Victorian town house in Kensington, stuffed with antiques. It’s popular with film industry types, and has a surprisingly young feel.

Why it’s special

Location (in a quiet tree-lined avenue), friendly staff and an informal atmosphere considering what the decor cost.

Hitting the sack

We liked Miss Ada’s bedroom, with a four-poster, and the enormous Tudor room, with a minstrels’ gallery, and bathroom hidden behind linenfold panelling. Modern technology and mini-bars are there, but well hidden in antique cabinets. Lovely toiletries from the White Company.

Sampling the fare

Excellent Bistrot One Ninety serves fishcakes with coriander (£8.99) and shoulder of lamb (£17.95). Affordable wine list.

Added attractions

Just a short hop from Harrods, the shops of High Street Kensington and the Royal Albert Hall.
