First impressions

Very sleek, very Clerkenwell. A pink “Z” sign marks the entrance to a retro reception, where steps lead to a lounge with vintage floral wallpaper, a trendy beaten-up leather sofa, coffee tables and cork stools. Above is a five-storey oval atrium with a skylight.

Why it’s special

Location (bang in the middle of Clerkenwell’s buzzing nightclubs, bars and restaurants), design (by Precious McBane, known for its retro, anti-minimalist, but high-tech look), and the food.

Hitting the sack

Comfy beds, long-thread carpet, Penguin classics, hot water bottles, shutters, internet access (£10 for 24 hours), and selection of 4,000 CDs. Best rooms at the rear, away from traffic. Great studios with large balconies on fifth floor. Each room has a “porno pink” lighting option.

Sampling the fare

Room service menu: artichoke ravioli with sage, tomato and black olive sauce (£9), taleggio cheese with fresh pear (£7), and salami, tomato and mozzarella panini (£4). Three-course meal with wine at the restaurant, £30 a head.

Added attractions

Bottled water comes from its own 1,500ft bore hole. Hallway vending machines selling half-bottles of champagne, beer, mixed gin and tonic, toothbrushes and toothpaste. High ceilings; used to be the office of Zetters football pools.

Wheelchair-friendly room on each floor; restaurant accessible.

The bottom line

Doubles £125.

What we think

Clerkenwell is hot, and so is The Zetter. And good value.
