Batsmen who once used to fill their boots at Trent Bridge now merely quake in them. That old jazz claim, “It don't mean a thing if it ain't got swing”, could be emblazoned on the ground's gates. But, as Yorkshire again bowled disappointingly after a masterclass from Charlie Shreck in the morning, Bilal Shafayat and Mark Wagh at least proved what self-denying application can bring.
Shreck, cutting his pace after a bristling new-ball burst on Tuesday, claimed three for 33 in an 11-over spell to return five for 58 as Yorkshire, who lost four men in the first hour, tumbled to 115 for nine, before a determined last-wicket stand reduced the deficit to 52 runs.
When Matthew Hoggard gained the seventh leg-before decision in the first 21 dismissals, undoing Matthew Wood for 14, it seemed that swing would prevail to the end. But the worth of what followed can be gauged from only four individual innings having reached 75 in the championship at Trent Bridge this year.
Shafayat, leaving wide balls, blocking inswingers and driving the full half-volleys, made 62 from 125 balls, but still outscored Wagh as 103 were added.
What Darren Pattinson, who has taken 17 championship wickets at 17.94 at Trent Bridge and 12 at 25 elsewhere, might have achieved in this match will not be known. But the blunt truth, on this evidence anyway, is that Hoggard, a rival controversially omitted from the second npower Test against South Africa, lacks the nip, consistent swing and control that made him the best bowler of his type in the world two years ago.
Painfully deflecting a rare, ferocious straight drive, Hoggard gratefully watched as mid-on sprinted over to take the fine, diving catch that eventually removed Shafayat. But Wagh, quietly going grey against the swinging ball by the Trent, moved to his eighth fifty of the campaign.
