The case for Madonna as an original style leader never really bore close inspection. What she has mostly been is someone who identifies popular emerging trends and hijacks them.
So it's probably no surprise that, at 50, she's chosen the path of so many celebrities and opted for a taut little face that's almost completely devoid of wrinkles. No crows' feet to suggest that she may have laughed once or twice. No frown lines to hint that any degree of thinking, feeling or evolving has occurred behind that forehead in the past five decades. But it is disappointing, because if Madonna really were the ground-breaker of her own mythology, surely she could have been the one to transmit an interesting image of what 50 could be to a generation of women who have come to fear ageing as one of the greatest evils of our time.
No one's suggesting that she should have let herself go, or even entirely let nature take its course. Heaven forbid. I'm all for whatever scientific intervention those lovely boffins in white coats come up with, so long as it doesn't result in the tight hazelnut with its unconvincing pointy cheekbones and chin that seem to comprise the McFace that we've all come to recognise in women of a certain age.
And there's another thing about ageless ageing: it really isn't ageless. In fact, any woman whose face doesn't move is a woman well past her teenage years. Why the aspiration to look ageless anyway? Isn't that what shop dummies are?

Hasn't anyone noticed how Madonna only looks fresh and young at events, and is normally seen looking her age in a trampy track suit just before/after a work out?
In fact this picture with this article was taken before the 'Madonna looks ill and horrid' pics which came out 2 weeks ago.
Ranto, London, UK
she is starting to look a lot like Cher, isn't she?
kim, SF, USA
Please, she is unrecogninable due to facial surgery.
Charlotte Maggs, Haywards Heath, England
Long time ago, in Arsenio Hall show, I think, she was ironic about plastic surgery. I remember I thougt then: Don't worry - you'll have many surgeries in the blink of an eye:):):)

If you insist on appearing in videos with Justin Timberlake and going on stage jumping about in questionable outfits you can't carry it off with the natural face of a 50 year old. She should have re-invented herself as a mature person making music with a message. Instead she choose lapdancing. Sad
Charlott, London,
Take Joanna Lumley-who would not like to look like her at her age?
Trim ,beautiful and proud of the time she has put in.
You Brits should focus more on her and Madonna is Madonna but Lumley is unique with a sense of humor en plus.
Trish White, Bridel, Luxembourg
Madonna is so predictable.

I would like to know how old lisa Armstrong is ,the women who wrote the article. Its a different story when you are under thirty five and the aging process has not a big issue ,but quite honestly with all that money and public scutiny why on earth wouid Madonna let herself go.

This IS what 50 looks like today! We have to compete with the airbrush employed by advertisers - but mostly who wants to feel all the empowerment of achievement at 50 but look tired all the time?
geraldine Leale, ascot, england
It's a pity that people like Madona can't have an ego reduction.
brian keating, agde, france
where are her wrinkles? ...in botox heaven.
tes, london,
Where are her wrinkles? Round the back of her head. She looks increasingly freakish, not good, just freakish.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
Oh heck - I thought the photo was of a candidate in the Joan Rivers lookalike contest. Just shows Madge can give a 75 year old a run for their money.
Helen Clapham, Cobham, Surrey
I blame Jeffrey Archer.
Ivan de Nemethy, London,
Have you people never heard of Photoshop?
Mike, Berlin,
Everyone (male and female) who is honest would agree that looks, slowly but continuously start falling apart after the age of 40. Madonna has a very physical job to do(SHOWbiz), she can t just turn into a saggy old thing like anyone else. Why not have work done if necessary.
Asta, Hamburg, Germany
I just dont get it !!? What is the problem with Madonna or anyone else looking great even old ?! All I can just is : Well done Madonna for looking amazing at 50! Maybe she just doesnt even have to try that hard to look young and fit, maybe she just does ! Give her a break. She is fantastic.
Krisztina T., Brussels, Belgium
what i really cant handle is the permanently fixed and controlled look of benign maternal and spiritually superior sympathy she has for the world....the eyes of the goddess thing .....its so bloody fake however it is funny and for that small mercy I guess we should be grateful...Amen
anne marie heelan, Paris, France
There doesn't seem to be anyone in the entertainment industry willing to risk a naturally aged face. Madonna does looks great, but sure, she looks as though she's had a bit of tweaking--beyond oxygen facials!
Amy, Orillia, Canada
What this shows simply is that Madonna, like the rest of us women, has insecurities. She is human at the end of the day! Plus she is married to a man 10 years her junior. PLUS she has obviously had some marital issues of late. Who can blame her for wanting to stay gorgeous, for those reasons alone.
