Richard Dadd (1817-1886) was an artist who at 26 stabbed his father, believing him to be the devil, and spent the next 43 years in Bethlem Hospital and its successor, Broadmoor Asylum. But he kept on painting, and a small exhibition of his work at Andrew Clayton-Payne, 14 Old Bond Street W1 (July 2-11), shows that he lost none of his powers after the murder.
There are two notable pictures from the years before his incarceration - a dainty nude, identifiable as a fairy by the fact that she is no taller than the grass she is crouching in, and a splendid painting of the sun setting in rich colours over Jerusalem.
In prison he continued to paint landscapes from memory, but it is his "Sketches to Illustrate the Passions" that make the greatest impression from this period. They are pictures that he was probably able to paint only because he had gone mad.
It is the eyes of the figures that haunt one. In "Brutality", a strong, bearded countryman who is striking his wife has eyes that gleam with some deadly terror that he himself is living through. The eyes of Cain after he has murdered Abel stare at some nameless, far-off horror. In "Agony - Raving Madness", the heavy face and body of a lunatic in chains are ravaged not by his squalid fate but an inner torment that shines out of his swelling eyes.
There is also a chilling "Sketch of an Idea for Crazy Jane" - a watercolour of the mad girl whom W.B.Yeats portrayed in his poems as a sympathetic, gnomic wit, but who here strides expressionless through the countryside, festooned in flowers and feathers.
This is a loan exhibition, with some pictures from the Bethlem Royal Hospital, and an excellent catalogue by Patricia Allderidge. It accompanies Master Drawings Week (July 5-11) when 20 galleries around Bond Street will have drawings for sale.
